perhaps the best Buster Keaton short film
I have special memory connected with this short film. It came as a surprise bonus on my "Three Ages" DVD - along with "My Wife's relations". I was beyond myself with joy to discover them 'cos it meant more fun, so I watched they with great pleasure. These films were selected as a bonus for a reason - they are among the best Keaton works! "The Goat" was the 1st Buster short film I ever watched, and indeed it was a fine introduction to this kind of his works. Everything about it is fine. Its great merit is that it's fast-pased, exciting, with new gags popping up every other second, great chases, smart plot, different locations... never drags and never bores you. It can easily compete with the best Charlie Chaplin works! The print quality is also very good, so is the music score.
One of the highlights is that short but delightful train sequence. I also like it when people gather around a big poster warning about the escaped murdered (with a huge portrait of Buster, who in reality isn't that criminal) and then he passes by and stands right near it, perfectly ignorant of everything, so the folks runs away in panic :D Really, just imagine yourself reading an ad about a wanted criminal and then he comes up and stands right in front of you. It always cracks me up.
This film deserves much more attention and acclaim that it usually gets. So don't miss it! If you haven't seen it you don't really know Buster Keaton.

This was the first silent movie I watched and I found it very interested how in many ways the lack of sound made it better not worse, just as a book can be better than movie because it leaves more to the imagination.

this was my first exposure to buster keaton and i must say i was quite impressed. i watched it a number of times and showed it to my friends, many of whom also enjoyed keaton for the first time. i downloaded the wmv version referenced in a different review on this page.
as for the content of the movie, the plot is stronger than many of the keaton films that i have downloaded since then.
overall i would sum it up by saying that i spent a higher percentage of the movie's runtime laughing than most any movie.

The Best Keaton Flick Yet!
An outstanding print! The best one I have seen on a Keaton flick ehre. And "The Goat" had more chuckles per reel than any of his other flicks I have seen to date. This one is a keeper!

It Got the Kids Going
A group of ten third graders watched The Goat yesterday from a DVD I'd made. Giggles and laughter from all of them exuded with obvious enjoyment. When I stopped the movie about half way through, announcing it was time for lunch they begged to stay. One kid muttered he'd never seen a movie like that without talking and just music. We watched the rest after lunch, and when I showed them the Prelinger web site they ran for pencils to write down the address.

It`s possible that the MPEG2 multiplexer Filter causes that problem?!
but then again, I`ve no problem playing back those files on my 6 Computer (Mac OSx/XP/Linux) as well as on my stand-alone DVD Player.
I reencoded this with the Windows Media Encoder. You may find this version much less cumbersome at under 200 Megs. FYI, the Windows Media Player is available for MAC, and installs cleanly with no mesy platform rivalry.
